The Museum of the Cinema’s Research Institute promotes investigation and specialised knowledge in the art and the techniques of the cinema and the image. It aims to be a reference centre and a place where information can be shared. It promotes research projects using the Museum’s collection and information relating to the history of the cinema, pre-cinema, cinema and education, and music of the cinema. Furthermore, it aims to instigate and develop training activities, publications and various initiatives for specialists and people interested in this field.

Services offered:

• Book and Newspaper library:
Specialised in the history of the cinema, principally in the origins of the cinema and most importantly, pre-cinema. It contains about 3,000 titles such as, reference works, other museums of the cinema or image catalogues and monographs. Important sections include photography, cinema tecniques, amateur cinema, music of the cinema, and cinema and education.

• Film library:
Made up of films from the beginnings of the cinema, classics, independent cinema, didactic material, documentaries about the cinema and material produced by the Museum itself (reports, various recordings, copies of films from the Museum’s collection, etc). Formats available are VHS, Betacam i DVD and the Museum has 1,300 films which can be seen in the projection room.

• Music library:
Sound tracks (LPs and CDs) which can be played in the centre.

• Data bases:
References can be made to the data bases of the Museum of the Cinema -Tomàs Mallol Collection, computerised using the program DAC and made up of about 8000 entries, although it is constantly being expanded.

• Information point:
A space reserved for information about the cinema and activities organised by other institutions: cinema festivals, film libraries programs, cine clubs; conventions, seminars, conferences, courses; performances, exhibitions; collectivism, etc.
